May Meeting Minutes 2012

May Meeting Minutes 2012

The meeting was called to order by the President, Jimmy-KE5RRA at 7:21 p.m. on May 11, 2012.  Our prayer was led by Kenny-KR9C and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jimmy-KE5RRA.

Secretary’s Report:

The Secretary’s report was read by Sandra-W5DIJ.  A motion to accept the minutes as read was made by Cecil-W5CQG and seconded by Kenny-KR9C and Scott-KF5NDQ.  The motion was passed by a majority vote of the club members present.

Treasurer’s Report:

The Treasurer’s report was read by Cecil-W5CQG.  An expenditure of $50 to purchase Bibles in memory of Kathryn Carter (mother of Kenny-KR9C and mother-in-law of Diane-KF5PBO) was noted, leaving a current balance of $709.11. A donation was made the night of the meeting and will be reflected in next month’s Treasurer’s report.  A motion was made by Scott-KF5NDQ and seconded by Morgan-KF5NDR to accept the Treasurer’s report as read.  The motion was passed by a majority vote of the club members present.

Old Business:

Fund Raising – Cecil-W5CQG pointed out that our options for fund raising are limited with the demographics of the club. We revisited the raffle option as something achievable for the club.  Raffling a rifle, shotgun or some popular seasonal item was suggested during the discussion.  If a rifle or shotgun is raffled it will be purchased from Nichols Department Store. Jackie-KF5LLU will be checking with the store about the purchase and reporting back to the club at next month’s meeting. Scott-KF5NDQ will be looking into obtaining a ticket template to make in-house raffle tickets.  It was decided that the price of the tickets will be determined by the price of the item to be raffled.  The discussion was tabled and will continue at the June monthly meeting.

New Opportunities – Kenny-KR9C reported that all of the paperwork for the D-Star radios has been completed and submitted to David Davis –KF5DQD and the radios would be purchased from Ham Radio Outlet.  While he had the floor, Kenny-KR9C, thanked everyone for all the expressions of sympathy and kindnesses shown his family during their time of sorrow and loss.

Equipment for Sale – Cecil-W5CQG was happy to report that the equipment he had for sale was purchased.  It was bought by the Manuel Family.  We hope that they will enjoy the use of the equipment for many years to come.

Fish Fry – The club members that attended the Fish Fry on Toledo Bend Lake given by the Hams using 3.957 MHz enjoyed the delicious fish and fellowship very much and thank the group for inviting them to come.

New Business:  Kenny-KR9C announced that Sabine Medical Center in Many, Louisiana and David Davis-KF5DQD will be conducting a Simulated Emergency Test (S.E.T.) drill on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 12:50 p.m. This drill is for Sabine Parish.   Cecil-W5CQG will take control of the 2 meter repeater using the KK5SM station and activate ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services).  You will not need to be a member of any club or organization to participate in this “drill.” Cecil-W5CQG will need you to check in and give you call sign, name and location at the time of you check in.  After checking in, you may go ahead and secure your station.  No farther action will be necessary.  Assistance has been promised by the Leesville area Ham operators.  The actual drill scenario was read to the club by Kenny-KR9C and copies were made and distributed to the members by Cecil-W5CQG.

Birthday Cake/Refreshments – Refreshments of a large chocolate chip cookie decorated with a purple “Happy Mother’s Day” and an Italian Cream Cake were furnished by Kenny-KR9C and Diane-KF5PBO.  Along with refreshments came their wishes for all the mothers to have a great Mother’s Day.  Thank you for the good wishes and the delicious refreshments.

Adjournment:

A motion was made to adjourn by Gale-KF5NDP and was seconded by Morgan-KF5NDO.  The motion was passed by a majority of members present.  The meeting was adjourned by the President, Jimmy-KE5RRA at 8:04 p.m.

Echolink Procedures

The Echolink node on the 147.280 repeater can be accessed from a 2 meter radio tuned to the repeater frequency. The station identification code for the N0TRQ-R node is 419465. (To find the identification codes for other stations, see the site http://www.echolinkmap.org. The site provides the ability to locate Echolink nodes using a clickable map.

The Echolink gateway will respond to the following commands using DTMF tones from the radio. The following is a list of the basic commands and functions necessary to use a Echolink node. For a complete list of all commands, seeEcholink Help

To establish a Echolink connection, perform the following steps:

  1. It is recommended that you first identify your station on the repeater and that you are attempting Echolink operation.
  2. Optionally, you can determine if the Echolink gateway is operational by keying a "*" DTMF tone. The gateway node will respond with status information.
  3. Key the four or five digit station code for the station or repeater that you wish to link to.
  4. After a few seconds delay, the Echolink node will respond with a "Connected" message if the link was successful. If the link was not successful, key a "#" to disconnect the gateway node.
  5. Following a successful connection, announce your presence on the linked repeater by calling CQ, etc.
  6. During a QSO using linked repeaters, let the 147.280 repeater tail completely drop before transmitting to avoid any timeout problems.
  7. At the end of the QSO, disconnect the link by keying a "#" DTMF tone. The Echolink gateway will respond with confirmation that the link has been disconnected.

Accessing Echolink From Your Computer

Perform the following the access a Echolink station or repeater from your computer.

  1. Download and install the iLink user program from the Echolink web site..
  2. Verify that you have a microphone properly connected to your computer and the the microphone input volume level is properly adjusted.
  3. Connect to the internet and run the Echolink user program.
  4. Select a station or repeater to link to from the displayed Echolink station link.
  5. Once connected, use the Enter key or spacebar to toggle between transmit and receive.

S.E.T. (Simulated Emergency Test)

Here’s a little ‘run down’ on the S.E.T. (Simulated Emergency Test) we had today. Twenty three people checked in from various places; NewtonTexasAlexandria,La.  MilanTexasLeesvilleLa. to name a few. All in all there was a good turn out. Thanks to those who did check in.

My understanding is that our score for the drill was listed as     EXCELLENT.   I want to thank all those who participated and on the same hand, lets pray the real thing doesn’t happen.               .....Cecil  (W5CQG)
